Upload your Web Page
to Loblolly.net

With Netscape Navigator 2 , 3 & 4 and Netscape Composer 4.

The following is a guide to help get you started in uploading your web page(s) to you Loblolly hosted site. You may find other ways and/or other software that works better for you.. NOTE: Netscape Navigator and Composer will not delete files or create or delete subdirectories. See Maintaining Your Web Site ---- Using Windows95 FTP or Using FTP.

Note: for your web site to start automatically when one types in http://www.loblolly.net/~username, yoy must have one of the following files in your public_html directory: index.html, index.htm, default.html or default.htm. The Apache web server on Loblolly.net will look for the one of these files in this order and load the first one it finds.

Also note that on Unix servers (Loblolly.net is), all file names are case sensitive; i.e. Index.htm is a different file than index.htm.

Netscape Composer 4.x Publish:

Have the web page to upload displayed on the Composer screen.

Click on File, then Publish

or Click on the Publish icon.

Then fill in Page Title: with your title.

for HTML Filename:enter the filename with the .htm or .html extension either here at the the end of the ftp address.

HTTP or FTP Location to publish to: this is where to type in the following:

ftp://your_login_name@www.loblolly.net/home/your_login_name/public_html

Example:ftp://davidd@www.loblolly.net/home/davidd/public_html where davidd is the login name.

User name: leave blank as we entered it in the FTP location.

Password: Either enter it and click on save password or leave it blank and be asked for it when you connect.

If other files are needed for the page to be uploaded, you may want to click on Files associated with this page or All files in page's folder. if they are not grayed out.

NOTE: public_html and sub directories under public_html are the only directories in your home directory that Apache, the web server has permission to use.

To Set the Default Publishing Location:

Click on Edit then Preferences.

Under Category, click on the plus sign next to Composer.

Now click on Publishing --

Default publishing location:

Enter a FTP or HTTP Site Address to Publish to: and type in the below.

ftp://your_login_name@www.loblolly.net/home/your_login_name/public_html

Example:ftp://davidd@www.loblolly.net/home/davidd/public_html where davidd is the login name.

If publishing to a FTP site, enter the HTTP address to browse to: http://www.loblolly.net/~your_login_name Does not work on Loblolly.net!

Netscape 2.x , 3.x and 4.x Upload:

At the Location, URL or Goto enter bar, type in:

ftp://your_login_name@www.loblolly.net

Example:ftp://davidd@www.loblolly.net where davidd is the login name.

You will then be asked for your password..

After your password is accepted, you will get a listing of your files and subdirectories. If you want to upload to a different subdirectory, click on it.

Remember that public_html and any sub directories under public_html are the only directories that Apache, the web server will use. Apache does not have permision to use any other directories in your home directory.

Once you are in the directory you want to upload to, click on File then Upload.

This will give you a windows source menu to select the drive, folder and file. Select the file to upload by clicking on it, click on Open. This will now upload the file to your website. You should see it listed in the displayed directory. If not, try clicking on Reload.

That's it! I think it's much easier to use than Composer to upload files. You can easily see what and where you are loading from and to.
