Using Win95 ftp to download Netscape

A guide only: this is only for purposes of education and demonstration of using ftp. NOTE:Netscape changes their FTP site, so the actual directories may be different than those listed below.Use the FTP commands cd and dir to find the current directories.

You can use the ftp program in Windows 95 to download Netscape or any other available file.

First make sure you have a directory to download the file to. For this example we will use the directory C:\TEMP. It should be fairly empty.

Next connect to Neosoft using the Neosoft connection under Dial-up Networking. You do not need to bring up a web browser except to test your connection to the Internet. Netscapes ftp sites can bog down in the afternoon and early evening due to net trafic at their site.

Now bring up a MSDOS window. This can be done by clicking on the Start button, then clicking Programs and over to MSDOS. This should bring up a MSDOS window.

Next you should see Netscapes greetings and logon messages.

You will get some more greetings messages and then a request to enter a password. Use your email address as the password.

NOTE:Windows 95 versions start with n32. Windows 3.1 versions start with n16. The files with a p in the name have more plugins included and are larger and will take a longer time to download.

You now should have sucessfully downloaded the 3.01 version of Netscape Navigator to your c:\TEMP directory. You now must install it on your computer. This can be down under MSDOS or in Windows - both ways are given below.

The Setup program will ask for the target directory and ask if you want to use existing bookmarks, preferences, and settings. You can install Netscape Navigator into your current Navigator directory, just make sure your current Navigator is closed. Now try using your new Netscape Navigator.
