Using Win95 ftp to download Netscape
A guide only: this is only for purposes of education and demonstration of using ftp. NOTE:Netscape changes their FTP site, so the actual directories may be different than those listed below.Use the FTP commands cd and dir to find the current directories.
You can use the ftp program in Windows 95 to download Netscape or any other
available file.
First make sure you have a directory to download
the file to. For this example we will use the directory C:\TEMP.
It should be fairly empty.
Next connect to Neosoft using the Neosoft connection
under Dial-up Networking. You do not need to bring up a web browser
except to test your connection to the Internet. Netscapes ftp sites can
bog down in the afternoon and early evening due to net trafic at their
site.
Now bring up a MSDOS window. This can be done by
clicking on the Start button, then clicking Programs and over to MSDOS.
This should bring up a MSDOS window.
-
C:WINDOWS> ftp type
in ftp at the MSDOS prompt
-
ftp> ?
type in ? to get a list of available ftp commands
-
ftp> lcd c:\temp type in lcd to
change to your c:\TEMP directory on your local hard drive
-
ftp>!dir
type in !dir to check that you really are in the C:\TEMP directory.
-
ftp> open ftp.netscape.com to connect to Netscapes
ftp site
Next you should see Netscapes greetings and logon messages.
-
user(ftp.netscape.com:(none)): anonymous
use the login name of anonymous
You will get some more greetings messages and then a request to
enter a password. Use your email address as the password.
- password: username@neosoft.com
use your email address as the password.
-
ftp> dir
to see the available ftp directories.
- ftp> cd navigator to change
to the navigator file directories.
-
ftp> dir
to see your options of Netscape Navigator versions to download.
-
ftp> cd 3.03
to change to version 3.03 directory.
- ftp> cd shipping/english to change to the available english versions.
-
ftp> dir
to see available operating system versions.
-
ftp> cd windows
to change to the directories for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 versions.
- ftp> dir to see the windows directories.
- ftp> cd windows95_or_nt for Windows 95 and NT versions
- ftp> dir to see the 3.03 Navigator versions - complete, gold and standard.
- ftp> cd navigator_standard to get the fastest to download.
-
ftp> dir
to see the available files to download.
NOTE:Windows 95 versions start with n32. Windows 3.1 versions start
with n16. The files with a p in the name have more plugins included
and are larger and will take a longer time to download.
-
ftp> bin
to change to binary mode for downloading.
-
ftp> get n32e303.exe to down load the n32e303.exe
file. It may take 30 minutes or more to download.
-
ftp> bye
to exit the Netscape site and exit the ftp program once the download is
complete.
-
C:\WINDOWS>
